is down

UPDATE 19:40 PDT: The 13 customers affected have received a credit and were emailed about it 20 minutes ago. The total downtime was about an hour from 5:40-6:40PM PDT.

The root cause was someone typing 'shutdown -h now' into the wrong window during some manual testing that had to be done on chessboard in particular in advance of releasing an update to the distribution tarballs. Unfortunately with the setup of chessboard, it was necessary to log in to do some configuration changes needed for testing. Going forwards, one thing that might help is using [ $(hostname) = "<hostname>" ] && shutdown -h now, or at least running hostname before shutdown -h now.
